Workflow Course review required

Hi,

I wondered if anyone had been on the workflow and advanced workflow development courses recently (I'm looking to go on one in London but any location would be OK).

I'd like to get an idea if you thought the course achieved it's objectives, what you reckone you learned etc, as a way of working out whether it's worth going on the courses, or better just picking it up from 'hands-on' knowledge in the field so to speak.

Are you looking for WFM class (the new way WFs are handled) or the old WFT technology ? I would be surprised if the latter is available any more, though it may be. However WFM will not work on your implementation.

However you can fly me out and I can teach you everything you ever wanted to know about WFTs. :-)

The class will teach you the syntax and how the commands work, but not the architecture or best practices.

Thanks for the reply, IW have confirmed it will be using workflow modeller, but I was hoping to get a good appreciation of the background of how it all works.

I appreciate we couldn't use the modeller in our setup, but hopefully an upgrade will be coming along in the not too distant future.

The other thought was to not bother with the course, and look to pick up the knowledge by getting our hands dirty. We've got a load of Perl and some CGI experience in the team so syntax and the like shouldn't be an issue. We just wanted to get an initial overview and detailed look at how it all 'should' work before we start introducing bad practise etc.

Your thoughts are welcome though, depending on what else we get back, I might reconsider paying for the course (and even though you were only part serious) looking to perhaps employ some experienced consultant here in the UK for a couple of days to show us the ropes.

Well - the "old" WFT technology employed XML and Perl and in general most externaltask and cgitask scripts were written in Perl too.

The "new" WFM technology uses java and/or javascript and it's generally recommended to use urltasks over externaltasks for running web services programs ... which can be written in Perl, Java, or whatever you like (as far as I know)

For the "old" technology - you can read the manual or the Workflow Tutorial Supplement and perldoc TeamSite::WFconstructor, and hundreds (if not thousands) of forum postings.

For the "new" technology - I think you're pretty much limited to the manual and whatever you can find in the forums.

Taking a class about something you *may* use in the future is, IMHO, a waste of time. But if you want to do it, then do it.

I would wait until I can get 6.7.1 loaded somewhere and have the need to start creating a new workflow. I started a new project 5 month ago and initially started with WFM, but decided to drop back to WFT.

There was a solid webcast (presentation and demo) about WFM last week. You can download and view that. But I would also wait until you have a real task to work on. You forget this really fast if you do not use it.
