The information in this article applies to product: e-Work
Issue
- The Windows taskbar disappears after a reboot following the installation of e-Work on Windows XP SP2 and Server 2003 SP1. In addition (or instead), there may be an inability to access much of the operating system, including Component Services and messages in the Windows event logs.
Discussion
- The existence of invalid accounts in DCOM access and launch security lists in Windows XP SP2 and Server 2003 SP1 may cause these problems. The failure occurs at some point after other configuration operations on DCOM security have been performed and the system is rebooted. e-Work installation performs DCOM configuration during deployment of the Engine.
Resolution
Keep these DCOM lists valid and up-to-date and check them before installing the e-Work Engine.
Go to Settings --> Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Component Services --> My Computer. Right-click, select 'Properties' and 'COM Security'. Note that Windows XP SP2 and Server 2003 SP1 introduced additional access and launch permissions lists called 'Limits'. Both types of lists should be checked.
In the event of an access failure, these permissions are not accessible from the Component Services administrative tool. In such cases, to fix the DCOM permissions lists, copy dcomcnfg.exe from a Windows 2000 machine to the machine in question. Then run dcomcnfg.exe, click on each of the default security permissions buttons, and select the options that are presented.
