The sad reality of the basic trick is when you have a large index collection and it becomes corrupted and index service won't come up. You have to delete the whole index collection and it takes days to re-index everything again. I wonder why IWOV can't provide better tool to make this easier.

What was your index size ?
Can you please provide the logs generated when the indexer was not able to come up ?
Reindexing everything is the last resort and usually the errors can be rectified. Also ensure that the indexes back ups are made perodically for avoiding this worst case.

well this is a dev box which is not really used. it had about 3GB of indexed content.
it wasnt an issue at all to delete the indexed. but yes, if i was on the production environment i would love better solution. this is the error that the indexing service was throwing and it is the only error in all the log files (iw.tsindex.log):

hey, i am having exact same issue on our QA TS server. (unix)
Could you please let me know, how you 'deleted indexes' when index manager was not up and running (due to fatal error WARN com.interwoven.hunter.index.BranchMapping...)?
$ iwndxpurgebr and iwndxrmbr are throwing errors saying indexer is not running.
Please help.

what are the errors you are getting when index service is shutting down? IF you can find the offending branch, you can remove it from branches.cfg and then delete branches.db. This should allow the index service to come online and the search clt's will then respond to your commands. This is much better than killing all search collections and starting over.
