Dealing with Old/Archived Content

I am trying to come up with ideas to deal with degrading links in older/archived content items.

We have content that goes back as much as 4 years and the links are, of cousre, breaking as things get moved or removed. Unfortunatly, removal of older content from the viewable archive is not an option. Any thoughts on a way to redirect all links in older pages to a custom error page or something along those lines?

Are you guys using any third party tool which does the security on your Website? If so it would be easy to archive all those and make them invisible. We have implemented this using ColdFusion.
