Metastorm Designer Manager's Edition Fails to Open on Windows Vista

Issue

• After the Designer Manager's Edition is installed on Windows Vista, it fails to open and the following error is displayed:

  Metastorm Designer has stopped working
  A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

  An error similar to the following is written to the Windows application event log:

  Faulting application eDesigner.exe, version 7.5.0.933, time stamp 0x2a425e19, faulting module kernel32.dll, version 6.0.6000.16386, time stamp 0x4549bd80, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x0004fcac, process id 0xf44, application start time 0x01c890109b815ec4.

Resolution

• Here is a workaround:

  1. Go to Settings --> Control Panel --> Programs and Features, and uninstall Metastorm Designer Release 7.5 Manager's Edition.
  2. Disable User Account Control (UAC). This can be done through the Windows registry. Go to HKEY\_LOCAL\_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Policies\\System and change the value of EnableLUA to 0 (zero).
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Install the Designer Manager's Edition.
  5. Re-enable User Account Control (UAC) by changing the above-referenced registry value back to 1 (one).
  6. Restart the computer.
  7. The Designer should now open.
