CLT privileges

This might seem a silly question, but I haven't yet seen it explicitly written anywhere:

If I am running a CLT (such as iwpublish) from a shell, I presume that that command is being run as the logged in user just as if I was logged in via ContentCenter?

EG. if I am logged in to a shell as 'slartyb', and then run 'iwpublish', then it is the same as 'slartyb' logging into ContentCenter and pressing the "New Edition" button.

Yes, thats absolutely correct. The only condition is the logged in user should have been permitted to operate that particular CLT.

When you run a command through the TS GUI - your ability to run the command may be limited by the role you are logged in with (at least prior to 6.7.1) - whereas when you run from the command line, you are granted the permissions of the highest role you can login with.

E.g.: If you can login as both an Author and an Admin - but you log into the GUI as an Author, you will [probably] not be able to interact with the staging area and version history - however if you're running from the shell, you are operating with the permissions of Admin.

In 6.7.1 it's a bit different, and I'm not sure I know all the permutations - but I think that there will be more of a 1:1 relationship between what you can do from the command line and GUI as your roles are based on vpath and not on a specific indication during login.
