Read-only fields difficult to read

We are running version 7.6.3 and have been getting comments for some time that read-only fields are very difficult to read (very faint).

 

The fonts can be made bigger and that helps the text fields. But fields that are dropdowns are even fainter and that still does not seem to help that type of field.

 

We played with one form and the only solution to making the read only dropdowns easier to read was to make all the fields on the form bold.

 

Does anyone have any suggestions as the how to improve the readability?

We've been complaining about this since 7.0 (about four years). I would be amazed if anyone would change it now given the length of time the complaint has been ignored.
