Setting up Performance Monitor to track dllhost performance
Performance monitor is a tool we use to diagnose memory leak issues i.e. the engine crashes periodically after consuming resources on the server. I've attached a performance monitor template that may be imported that will perform these steps for you however it may not be compatible with all operating systems.
The following instructions are for setting up perfomance monitoring for the engine server (dllhost and sql server if its on the same server). These instructions are the same for a split deployment or Oracle database you would just track dllhost.
A. Performance info gathering
I would like to ask for performance monitor logging to be done for the:
- Engine process (dllhost.exe) on the engine machine
- SQL Server process (sqlserver.exe) on the database box or if this is Oracle check the Oracle process
I would like for this to be done by doing performance monitor logging which generates .blg files.
The way to do this is:
- Start here in Performance monitor
- Go to the Action | New Log Settings menu, then specify a name. e.g. Metastorm logging. This yields:
- The next step is to Add Counters…
<
Above you can see I’ve asked for all counters for all instances of dllhost.exe to be collected. Now click Add.
I suggest you also add the SQL Server counters here as well by specifying the correct computer, then ‘All counters’ for sqlserver.exe and click Add again. But if you prefer you can gather this information separately on another machine. Click Close.
- You should something like this:
You can see there are also options for scheduling log collection.
If satisfied to go ahead with logging now, press OK. Ensure that the logging has started. You can see this here:
As you can see, logging can be switched on and off at will.
