Is it required to have same number of licenses for both KE and BPA?

Hi there, is it a requirement to always buy licenses for KE and BPA in equal number i.e. if we buy 5 BPA licenses, do we also need to buy 5 KE licenses?

Kind regards

  • Hi Krishna,

For optimal utilization of Knowledge Exchange, Metastorm strongly recommends the same number of licenses of Knowledge Exchange be equal to the ProVision product.

  • Hi Mark, thanks for your swift reply.

My understanding is that the effective ratio of 'number of BPA licenses' to the 'number users' is 1:3. i.e. if there are 5 floating type BPA licenses, then Up to 15 users could utilise them effectively, in developing the models. It is assumed that on an average, one user spends about two to 'two-and-half' hours a day in actively working on the tool.

However, it only takes about 2 to 3 minutes (on an average) to either "Check-out" the models from KE repository to Sandbox or to "Check-In" them back to KE Repository from Sandbox.

Why do you (i.e. Metastorm) recommend equal number of KE and ProVision BPA licenses?

Are you suggesting while the user is working in his/her sandbox, after checking out the models from KE repository, the tool still uses both KE and ProVision BPA licenses simultaneously?

Your clarification will be highly appreciated.

  • Hey Krishna,

One quick clarification, the Floating License Server delivers licenses on a first come first serve basis.  So if a user opens PV and thus connects to the FLS to acquire a license, the FLS will deliver a license with all available options.  The way to manage this would be to create Groups within the FLS options file to define only certain users being able to use the KE feature. This would mean that someone would have to do a lot of switching back and forth to define when a user can and can't have a KE feature/license... or you would need to define 'super' users that had this right, check out the data, and then pass that data to the users who wish to work on a specific data set. Or, have a like number of licenses and thus avoid the extra work.

The users will retain the KE feature until they close ProVision, and then the KE feature gets released back to the pool of available licenses/features that users can borrow/checkout. So, Yes, ProVision uses the KE and BPA features in the license simultaneously.

I have a post that goes further in depth of how PV and KE work with the Floating license server here: /awd/forums/questions/3404886

  • Hi Matt, thanks for confirming the fact that ProVision uses both KE and BPA features in the license simultaneously and further explanation on how KE and PV licenses work.

Don't you think, given the utilisation of KE feature is minuscle in comparision to that of BPA (i.e. few minutes versus few hours), Metastorm must enhance the product to allow the users to switch from "BPA + KE" to "just BPA" and vice versa on a dynanmic basis.

  • Hey Krishna,

Product Management handles those kinds of decisions, but you can submit your IDEA to the IDEAs forum to potentially be included in a future release. http://communitycentral.metastorm.com/t5/Idea-Central-Metastorm-Product/idb-p/Ideas/label-name/metastorm%20provision%20&%20knowledge%20exchange
