DBI / DBD upgrade/install

Hi Guys,

I'm trying to install DBI/DBD from DBI-1.59.tar.gz dowloaded from CPAN on my local machine 1st before upgrading it on teamsite server as a precaution to make sure it installs completely without errors. Where can I get this MakeMaker.pm module for my makefile.pl.

is a pragma that should be part of the CORE perl distribution - where did you get your version of Perl from? What version is it?

Just to be on the safe side, copy $IW-HOME/iw-perl to you computer, and try the upgrade that way

ActiveState is a pretty reliable (standard) for Perl for PC's - so I'd be surprised if it didn't come with the strict pragma (unless something went wrong during installation?)

Can you post the code you were using when you got this error?

Also how can I get iw-perl to work on my local PC if I wanted to do tests using iw-perl. I have copied iw-perl folder from server to my local PC. This may be better since install upgrade will use similar setup. If I can't then I'll do test using active perl.

My mistake - I thought you were talking about a custom script that was giving you problems with the strict pragma - not the actual source file from the distribution.

If it doesn't like 'use strict;' I suggest re-installing ActiveState Perl again - because there's something definitely wrong.

I'm not sure trying to transfer iwperl over from the TS server to your personal workstation is a good idea - you can try it if you'd like but it's completely unsupported.

As long as the scripts you intend to write don't rely on IWOV modules you should be able to test the DB connectivity on your own machine and then transfer over all the DBD modules to your TS server (assuming they're the same OS / architecture.

If you're using ActiveState perl - I think you need to use ppm instead of cpan - however, you might be able to use cpan and just start with:

CPAN> install Term::ReadKey

if that works, then quit and restart cpan and see if the problem has gone away.

I've had mixed results running iwperl's cpan on Windows (at this point, I can't think when I last ran iwperl's cpan on Solaris, or any cpan on Windows - so take that statement with the proverbial grain of salt)

When it works, it's very nice - when it doesn't work, you may find it "easier" to download files directly from the CPAN web site and manually go through the build steps as per the README files.

You don't need to uninstall cpan - just ignore that it's there.

I ran vcvars32.bat file below and also set env variables manually and it still didn't work after theses 2 tries. Like I said, I haven't tried to use iwperl's cpan on Windows for quite some time, so I cannot provide you any specific information about the above - you can look at the actual source files involved (it tells you in the error messages where the problems are occurring) and you might even be able to run the whole thing in debug mode.You also need to spend some time reading the various README files that come with the module you are trying to build (DBD's tend to have a bunch of them) as they might cover the issues you're running into.

Why am I getting the following repetitive errors below when the files required are in the correct path. The config file lynx.cfg is in the same unzipped folder as lynx.exe. I have run cpan cmd manually from iw-home\iw-perl\bin directory. I'm currently running this on a vmware test machine with teamsite using iwperl.

What directory are you in when you initially run cpan?

It's looking for the lynx.cfg file in the current working directory - so unless you're running cpan from within the directory where lynx.exe lives, it isn't going to find one there.

Do you have write access on the current working directory?
It's possible it would create a lynx.cfg file there if it could, but can't?

If you have a lynx.cfg file somewhere on your system, I suggest copying it to your home directory and to your home directory\.cpan\ directory - and then try running cpan and see what happens.

Thanks your suggestion it worked but now I'm stuck at this point below, what should I put as answer to question. My responses don't seem to be working, but are believed to be right.

First, pick a nearby continent and country (you can pick several of
each, separated by spaces, or none if you just want to keep your
existing selections). Then, you will be presented with a list of URLs
of CPAN mirrors in the countries you selected, along with previously
selected URLs. Select some of those URLs, or just keep the old list.
Finally, you will be prompted for any extra URLs -- file:, ftp:, or
http: -- that host a CPAN mirror.

Select your continent (or several nearby continents) [] north america
invalid items entered, try again
Select your continent (or several nearby continents) [] europe
invalid items entered, try again

It doesn't give you a list to select from? like choosing '1', '2', etc.?
Also - it says space-separated not comma separated - so the first one above would look like two selections, and the last one above would look like one selection
