depends on what version of Teamsite?
In TS 6.7.1 , it is possible to define custom roles and assign users to them using 'iwroleadm' command.
In TS 6.5 there are only four default roles available and it is not possible to play around much.

I believe the iwaccess CLT works well for this (too?)

I am using TeamSite 6.7.1 on Solaris 10

But iwroleadm does not allow me to change a user role per branch but only manage roles. I looked at the documentation and there is no branch parameter there.

iwacces is better, it can give me the roles per user per branch:

[fbousqu@rdteam2]-[~]$ iwaccess roles-of-user /default/main/AU -user lrampon
admin
[fbousqu@rdteam2]-[~]$

iwaccess can add role to a user for a branch:
[fbousqu@rdteam2]-[/usr/iw-home/httpd]$ iwaccess add-permission-entry /default/main/AU -user lrampon -role editor
[fbousqu@rdteam2]-[/usr/iw-home/httpd]$ iwaccess roles-of-user /default/main/AU -user lrampon
admin
editor
[fbousqu@rdteam2]-[/usr/iw-home/httpd]$

iwaccess can also remove role to a user for a branch:
[fbousqu@rdteam2]-[/usr/iw-home/httpd]$ iwaccess remove-permission-entry /default/main/AU -user lrampon -role editor
[fbousqu@rdteam2]-[/usr/iw-home/httpd]$ iwaccess roles-of-user /default/main/AU -user lrampon admin
[fbousqu@rdteam2]-[/usr/iw-home/httpd]$

Please refer the below example for changing a user role per branch with command line

The following command grants to the user dinesh the permission to perform the
operations associated with the role dbadmin on the branch /default/main. This example
assumes that the TeamSite role dbadmin is already defined:
% iwaccess add-permission-entry /default/main -user dinesh -role dbadmin
The following command makes the user dinesh the owner of the branch /default/main:
% iwaccess set-owner /default/main dinesh
Note
Execute iwroleadm -all-operations for a list of valid operation names.
