BPMN is developed and promoted by the Business Process Management Initiative (BPMI) within the Object Management Group. According to their definition:
The Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) is a graphical notation that depicts the steps in a business process. BPMN depicts the end-to-end flow of a business process.
BPMN was designed to be simple enough to be understandable by business users yet sufficiently rich to represent complex process implementation details. In essence, BPMN was designed to bridge the communication gap that can arise between business people and systems implementers. For a list of books and articles about BPMN, visit http://www.bpm.org.
