Newbie question here... Is OTDS a requirement for AppWorks? Is it necessary if I am using Tempo Box or Everywhere? Can I use our already existing AD or LDAP server?

Yes you will need OTDS, as when installing AppWorks, you will be asked to used the OTDS that comes with AppWorks install package or connect to existing one.
Noe: As per the Tempo Box install guide you will need to connect to an existing OTDS
