We have a request to overwrite the content in a dev branch with some newer content. Not a big deal we would just delete work area contents on server and put in new contents. my question is however : should we also delete all of staging ? what happens to the version stuff and editions if they have them ? What is the best way to update a work area with newer content ?

If you delete a WA, then I assume you will submit those files inorder to unlink STAGING contents. So I think the process is pretty straight forward...

You cannot delete the content in the Staging area.

If you want to completely get rid of everything (all versions) then delete the branch, create a new one and import the updated information. It is highly unlikely that you really and to do that.

Play with the workarea and leave everything else alone.

what about the idea of deleting everything in WA and then do a submit to staging ? won't that delete all staging stuff also ? if i do it all that way then put new content in WA at server level outside of IW then submit i am assuming i will repopulate staging. I just wonder how this effects versioning....it is highly possible that when i put the new content back has not changed and there for the last version is still good........ ???

You can do that, though you will likely hit errors during the submit (mostly stale locks).

You will want to create an edition for the previous instance.
