Not started to use Workflow modeller however to brief about the concept is any job variable is always within scope of a task. You can set/update the value of a job variable within any type of task.

Have you tried checking any of the CLTs given in the manuals?

I don't believe the fact that you're using WFM vs. WFT makes any difference with respect to how you're cgitask script interacts with task and/or job variables - you should be able to use the same code (e.g.: TeamSite::WFworkflow->SetJobVariable, ...)
