FormAPI and buttons

We use buttons radio/callout buttons on some of the templates together with FormAPI and OnCallout event to populate some data in the DCT.

Generally, if you want to hide an element in a DCT, you can always do

.setVisible(true|false);

but the above does not work on callout buttons.

I've tried using dialog, but it looks like I can not access it through FormAPI.

Are there any workarounds? How can you hide a standalone button w/o wrapping it in a container?

I've hacked it once, long time ago. Short of hacking I believe this Forum general consensus is that the only way
to achieve it in any supported manner is to encapsulate callout field in a container and toggle container visibility.
