Reg Backup to Tape using third Part Utility

Hi,
Our system Win 2003 and TS 6.5
Reg: Taking backup of Drive(eg: D Drive, where Teamsite Store resides) to Tape.

We need to take backup of D Drive, where Teamsite store is installed. This is the corporate Back up policy. This is not specific to Teamsite Content or Code backup, which we are doing via Utility(Store Freeze).

Issue:
We are using TSM((Tivoli Storage Manager) third party software to Back up Windows File System. When the Software is trying to move the Store data we are getting the following exception:

Question:
* Can we back-up the Windows Drive(D or C drive, where teamsite store resides) when teamsite is running?
* If possible/not, Could you please provide some technical explanation.

This is all well documented in the manual. You should try to read it.

You do backup the iwstore however you need to have the backingstore frozen while the backup is running. Your backups are running while it is being used, so the backup you generate is useless.

You need to find time when the system is unused and you can have the backup scheduled. You also need to run iwfreeze (with a parameter to tell how long to freeze) and have it frozen while the backup finishes.

Yes we(Development team) do have back up process using Teamsite Utility(Store Freeze CLT commands and everything).

There is a Corporate team who controls all the servers. They are taking back of all the drives using TSM software. The error I reported is from the third party software logs.

We told them its not possible to take backup of teamsite files when they are active & running.
But we want to double check is there any Intelligent way or tool which can take the back up...

You have to do something, if they are going to backup during the day, then you will likely have worthless backups.

Have your boss yell and scream. The corp team needs to find a way to schedule the backup at a consistent time.

If you cannot do that, then write a script that you can schedule late at night. It should run iwfreeze, then xcopy the iw-store to another disk and then remove the iwfreeze. The new directory is what should be backed up and restored if there is a problem.

This is not a good solution since you certainly can be a day off on your backups, depending on when this runs and when your backups run.

Yes we are also planning to do the same, by exclude the teamsite store directory from their backup process, as we are running it at our end...

It may be documented. It is a royal pain still. Anybody remembers scandalous iwbackup?

Point taken

Unix boxes can use mirrored disks, break the mirror, backup the non-live and start the mirror again. As I have heard this is none too popular in DOS environments.

When I was with Rational, which had ClearCase (architecturally similar to TeamSite with the filesystem approach), we had a snapshot approach for backups. You run a command which does a short freeze, creates a snapshot of the DB and then releases. You could then backup live. Restoring was a little more problematic since you had to run an app to basically do a consistency check and fix errors in the backingstore (since contatinors changed during the backup process).
