Line # 2 is missing the rest of the statement:

< iw_sql_query stmt ='insert into customer (first_name,address) values('John',

What are you trying to do ? debug what you have or ...?

after writing the script, i went on running the prog. but it wouldn't run, because it gives an error message saying that after the word John. Is something wrong with the syntax? or the way i am creating the table?
i am not sure why the prog. won't run to completion!

You have a number of problems.

First the semi-colon seems to be in the incorrect spot:

address varchar(20) Smiley Wink

Second you have nested single quotes, which won't work

='insert into customer values('Bill','Third Park Dr')/>'

You forgot quote in the second line before First and after John'

query stmt ='insert into customer (first_name,address) values('John',First

Also you might wanna use double quotes and then single quotes.
