when i try to preview the data record i created using preview i get the message "The preview directory /preview for the presentation template xyz.tpl does not exist". I have my checked my templating.cfg

Somewhere you have the preview directory set to "/preview" instead of "/" - and you apparently do not have a "/preview" directory in that branch / workarea - so you either need to create the directory or fix the setting.

Every time, when you preview the DCR, Teamsite create a physical page under your workarea if you don't have a /preview (blah blah) directory.

The reason to create the Preview directory is meaningful
