associating more than one sublement to item

Is there a way to associate more than one sub-element with the same item name ?
For eg. if I want to associate <text> and <browser> with <item name="test">, what would the approach be?

Sounds like a container would be best used in this situation.
<container name="test">
<item name="text_name">
<text.../>
...
<item name="browser_name">
<browser.../>
....

One user cannot be presented with two UI elements for a single item. However, by using the <allowed> tag, different users can be presented with different UI elements.
If the <text> and the <browser> are to contain distinct pieces of data, then I agree with the previous post -- wrap them up together inside of an "and" <container>.

is there no workaround for this .....presenting 2 UI elements for a single item ?

If you're using TeamSite 5.5.2 - you might consider FormAPI - where you could have two distinct elements - but tie them together with JavaScript / FormAPI code.

A <browser> includes a text box, similar to <text>, so why are you interested in having both? Do you want to apply a validation-regex or a <default> something? You could do either with FormAPI on a <browser> field.

is this for testing purposes, or is it for a real usecase? what are you trying to accomplish?

I need 2 buttons associated with the item name.
The first button will mimic the browse functionality. The user will be able to select a file from the pop-up and poplulate the text box.
The second button is a cgi callout with the item_name as callback variable name. It reads the item_name and the value associated with the item_name for further processing.

Why don't you put a <cgi-callout> on the <browser>?
