Displaying multiple bits of data together

Shazam

Hi guys,

I know I am missing something really simple, but.......I want a paragraph where each paragraph will contain a Link with Link text, some spaces, and then an optional paragraph of text.

Right now, the data displays with the link/link text one right after another, then each paragraph one right after another.

The only thing I can think of is to use a table, but would prefer not to if possible.

Help?

Your Pest,

Suzanne

I think this is an issue of the DCT in combination with the PT - not just the PT by itself. It sounds like you need a replicant container element that contains both a textarea for a paragraph and a [set of] field for link information - then your PT would iterate through the instances of the container outputting the paragraph and link from one instance before looping and outputting the paragraph and link from the next instance, and so on.

Shazam

Hi guys!

The code suggestion given yesterday would not display any of the data containing the links. I tried the following HTML code and all works with this code, EXCEPT that the description for each individual group of data is displayed repeatedly for all of the links, rather than each link description being displayed. The link is not yet available to the public yet, otherwise I would share.
$count = 0;

iteration="itcount">

I think that my datacapture file is correct, as it is layed out exactly as I want it when I go to enter the content. Here is the code for that:
Download Section Title

Title
This is the title of the Downloads Section.

Description
This is the description of the page.

Download Link Title

Title
This is the title of the link.

Link Path
This is the path for the link.

Description
This is the description of the link.
Thanks, guys. I am slowly but surely getting it. What is frustrating is that this isn't HARD.....the concept is SO damned easy.....

Thanks,

Suzanne

You reuse the same variable instance within the nested iterate statement, change the second to description. Also, you should not need iteration="itcount" unless you want every 3rd and have itcount set to 3.

Andy,

Thanks for your hints! ;-)

When I don't use icount, it displays the first link's description for all of the links I have defined....

Sorry, I am SO close to being finished with this template!!!!

I am uncertain why you have 2 iterate statements with the same parameters (nested). I highly doubt that would do what you want.

Are either of these the results you want:

Looking at the DCT and the PT code you posted - the following is incorrect:
iteration="itcount">
You are nesting the same iteration within itself - but the instance.description element is not a replicant in and of itself, so therefore you would be printing all of the descriptions for each of the links. I think you can just remove the inner iw_iterate container but leave the iw_value statement and you should be okay.

Stylistically, if you're going to use XML-formatted PTs - you should use the alternative format for the TS directives when they are embedded within an XML/HTML tag:

<a href="{iw_value ... /}" ...>

try something like this

Perhaps I should make this a new topic, but it involves this same template and similar code.

I have one more section, which is exactly like the previous one, which is working with this code now:
$count = 0;
There are only a few differences.....the link path and description are optional, which I was able to take care of in the datacapture file. But here's the kicker.....

I need to look at two items now, before displaying the data. I not only need to check to see if the description field has anything in it (as demonstrated above), but I also need to check the path field, before displaying the data.

Is there an AND ELSE statement allowed? I only see the IF and ELSE listed on the help page. Is there a way to nest ifs and is that something I should be doing?

Thanks guys. Too bad you don't both live closer, I bake a mean chocolate cake and you both certainly deserve it!! ;-)

this could be achieved using logical operators like "or (||)" or "and(&&)" within your if condition

Hi Phanie,

I was so hoping this would work, but I get this error:

not well-formed (invalid token)

Thanks for trying!

could you give this try .. if it doesnt work this time upto the two experts Smiley Happy

I wondered about that! Nope, same error.....;-(

Happy Monday everyone! ;-)

Phanie, that works.....just as it is coded!!!

But what I need is more complex. I spent some time going through it this weekend, and what I need is something that can check multiple scenarios.....

This section will always have at least one title, and can always have a combination of the following:

Title may be a link with no Description

Title with no link with Description

When there is just a title, will need two page breaks if there is no description, so that the next title displays correctly.

So, it seems that I need to check to see if the fields have anything in them, or a combination, like path is empty, but description is not, and vice versa...

I am very new to PERL and IW, but just know there has to be a way to check for multiple scenarios.....

I was looking at the iw_ifcase and wondered if that would work. Just having trouble with the syntax.

Andy? Fish? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Suzanne

how about this final try ..

You have a few choices. I am not certain that ifcase will work, but you should be able to do this with with Perl if then else or TPL if then else. Using Perl would likely be easier, but is harder to understand. The TPL iw_if will work, but will be a pain to do because of all of the nested iw_if, iw_then, iw_else and close tags.

I would try the latter, using a lot of white space to match up tags.

Post any parts that don't work and someone can look at it.

Andy

Shazam

Andy, great! I wasn't sure if I could embedd that many if_then statements.

Ok, I have my code, have all the choices, but one question.....will I have to have an ending tag for EVERY tag, whether it is the else, if, etc?

That may be my downfall....placing them correctly! ;-)

I'll try what I have and post it if I cannot figure it out.

Thanks, SO MUCH!

I GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!! Whoo hoo!!!! ;-) Sorry, I am just a little excited over this!! I CANNOT believe I am finished with this template!!! Oops, better hold that until I have the final approval from the group.....

Was getting an error on the first (last if statement) closing iw_else statement and I had one too many closing iw_else statements!

Andy, using the template iw statements worked well for me, because it was easy for me to see the flow, since I use so many tags in my HTML.

Thank you all!!!!! *big smile*
