Authors and File-->New Job

mogoo

We have a workflow that emails a list of pages to reviewers who are casual contributors; i.e. they never work in teamsite, only view pages. This is working great as a New Job item, except that Authors can't initiate it. All I need is for New Job to show up for Authors outside of the To Do List, because they need the ability to attach files.

I'm guessing that's going to have to be a custom menu thing, but can I call on the New Job script, because that's exactly what I want. What would be the syntax for that? (Using TSv5.0)

I don't know if this suits your requirements but as I worked on similar thing sometime back, I thought of sharing it.

Authors get the ability to kick off workflows either via Submit event or tt_data event. tt_data only incase it is with templates. So, I used submit event for them and that made it possible have them kick off my custom workflow.

Am not sure if you would like to use this.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, Akshat. I've thought of the Submit angle, but I feel this would be too confusing. This particular wf that we've done is for if people develop index_versionA.html, index_versionB.html, index_versionC.html, only 1 of which is going to be verbally approved by the reviewer; the rest will eventually get deleted.

With the Authors, I'm trying to keep it simple. I don't want them to think they're submitting, when all they're doing is emailing reviewers. I don't want them to have to choose between 2 wf every time they click submit. If only New Job would show up in the Author menu at all times, that would solve my problem. Does this change in v5.5?

Authors do not have the option of File->New Job in 5.5.2.

In the past I have started workflows with a custom menu item by using the menu item as a wrapper for iwwft_instantiator. I gather up all the required name/value parameters and post them to /iw-bin/iwwft_instantiator.cgi

For the most part, you need to pass the following:
<input type=hidden name=iw_user value=$user_name>
<input type=hidden name=iw_role value=$user_role>
<input type=hidden name=iw_home value=$iwhome>
<input type=hidden name=dtime value=$dtime>
<input type=hidden name=when value=$when>
<input type=hidden name=iw_branch value=$branch>
<input type=hidden name=iw_workarea value=$vpath>
<input type=hidden name=iw_use_defaults value=true>
<input type=hidden name=iw_template_file value=$wft>
<input type=hidden name=iw_file value=file1>
<input type=hidden name=iw_file value=file2>

With that being said, I do not know if this is officially supporeted, but it has worked on all modern versions of TS on Solaris.

So, jmichnow, how did you pass all those values to iwwft_instantiator.cgi? Did you use the custom menu item to open up an html page, then pass them from there?

One way would be a custom menu item.

The custom menu item can programmatically figure out all the form variables, print out the html for the form, and automatically submit it with javascript.

I have attached a snippet of code that I have used in the past. It is a subroutine that starts a workflow. I did a quick and dirty cut and paste, so you probably won't be able to just "drop it in" and get it working, but it might give you an idea of what is required to get it working.

In the past, I have use this for deployment. We created a custom deploy CGI to select files, and then we handed the file list off to a wotkflow for more processing.

Hope this helps,
-Jed

PS:

Oops! Actually the attachment is in my next post. I was a little too quick with the submit button.

This could be done by your custom menu item. Ofcourse you would have a CGI for this custom menu item. In that CGI, you could have a page redirect which will redirect to /iw-bin/iwwft_instantiator and you will have to pass all these variable values as a query string. I have done this query string way in past for couple of my workflows and also posted that in previous posts. I am sure this would work even for a custom menu item since you would use CGI for it too.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the suggestions before, I've almost got it...
But in my wft, how do I refer to all of those hidden input values that were sent via the ipl?

I've got a custom menu item that brings up the proper workflow form, but when I try to submit that form, it won't, because there are no values for iw_user and iw_workarea.

Any help, please?

They can be picked up using __VALUE__

my $my_user = __VALUE__('iw_user');

If you attach the ipl and wft, I might be able to help you more...

One way is to read from HTTP_COOKIE for these values in your Custom CGI. You would get all values for user, workarea, session etc. And since you are activating it from within the UI, it would fetch the values.

Another way is to use iwperl perl module to fetch these values.

Hope this helps!

Jed-
I thought I was doing that, but I'm sure I'm missing something. Attached are my files. Thanks for your help!

Migrateduser

The wft is not picking it up because the ipl is not properly getting the form variables. When you collect the variables at the top of the ipl, try doing this:
my $FORM=TeamSite::CGI_lite->new();
$FORM->parse_data();
my $user = $FORM->{form}{'user_name'};

instead of this:
my $user_role = $FORM{'user_name'};

ok, I've got all the values passed except it's not attaching the files (I can pass them individually, but can't figure out how to designate them as an array, so I can cycle through... attached is the updated ipl

The parameter with the full path to all selected files is:
path_0, path_1, path_n

Since you do not know how many files will be selected, you need to loop and keep grabbing vaues until you get an undefined value. Something like this will do it:

my $pcount=0;
while(my $selectedpath = $page->param("path_$pcount"))
{
print "file $pcount = $selctedpath<br>\n";
$pcount++;
}

There may be a more efficient way, but I do not know it.

PS:
Chances are the code above has syntax errors. This is coming from memory.
