In 2001 Interwoven introduced the OpenAPI interface to communicate with the TeamSite server. This client-server model used Java RMI as the transport mechanism. In 2002 Interwoven introduced a new interface - Content Services. The Content Services SDK (CS SDK) 2.0 also provides an API to talk to the TeamSite server. CS SDK 2.0 provides 2 modes of transport - local and remote. The local transport is a high performance JNI based solution to be used when the clients using the API are local to the TeamSite server. The remote transport supported is SOAP, compliant with the Web Services model based on SOAP. This architecture provides a platform independent way to access the API. Currently J2EE, and .NET client configurations are supported. Over time, additional capabilities will be added to the CS SDK, to cover all Interwoven Products and Product Lines.
OpenAPI has a highly object-oriented design, but with a lot of overhead due to the fact that operations were not intuitive, and were not efficient due to the conflicting goals of the OpenAPI design and the evolution of TeamSite.
CSSDK has taken a method-oriented approach to the problem. The java client API is still object-oriented in a very intuitive manner, but the Web Services API is method oriented due to the very nature of web services based on the SOAP protocol. The java API is an out of the box object-oriented API provided by Interwoven, based on the flat method oriented Web Services API, defined in Web Services Definition Language (WSDL), that is commonly used for the SOAP protocol. The users have the flexibility to use either method, depending upon use cases.
