releasing locks from files...

Hi,

We have our TS users spread across the globe. Now if a user edits some file in the wa, and doesn't remove the lock and also doesn't submit, that results in a time consuming process for asking the user to remove the lock or asking the admin to do it.

Can something be done here, which will release all the locks after a specified period of time?

If you're on TS67.x kindly Refer. Pg-33 "Configuring the TS Server " ts.670.admin.win.pdf that covers the Locking Models in Teamsite.I believe currently there's no provison in Teamsite for a "Timeout" release of the Lock on a Asset .

Teamsite offers three Locking Models : Submit, Mandatory Write And Optional Write . There are also a few parameters that can be set in the iw.cfg Configuration File depending on your choice of the Locking Model .

You might want to use PERL, remember ? from your post, you might want to check the status of modified files, locked statuses and submit statuses before releasing the locks.

Hi,

In this case,you can specify a workflow that gets activated whenever a content item is created or edited. The workflow just records the modified time and unlocks the file automatically after a specified period of inactivity. You should have a Perl script to unlock the files if the modified date has not changed after the pre-specified period.

That's a great idea but it could overload your server (starting a workflow for every locked file)

The workflow can be instantiated as soon as a content item is saved(The "Save" button functionality can be edited to instantiate a workflow simultaneously by using a Perl script).........

You could write a cron or Windows Scheduler script (you didn't mention what platform you were on) that could run periodically throughout the day (once an hour, once every 4 hours, whatever) that traversed the branches, retrieved a list of all locked files for each branch, examined the last modified time-stamp of the files in comparison with the current time (make sure you're using the same time-zone) and if a given file has been locked for more than some length of time since last modified either:

Well, at some point you need to execute the 'iwunlock' clt.

The (perl-)code around that call is completely up to you (and your requirements):
- create a cgi that users can use to unlock a locked file (maybe restricted to a limited set of well educated users)
- create a script that is run at intervals
- ......

It's really up to you.
