TeamSite Backup

When we take back up of TS, we just take back up of the iw-store, right ?
It will automatically take back up of all the workareas.

I was going thru the PDF for TS 6.7.0 admin PDF Page no 180, in which it was stated that "TS workarea can also be backed up to recover individual files or directories from their workareas rather than having to recover the entire content store."

You have to go iw-store to take the back up and once you take the back up of iw-store, why do you need the back up of individual work area ? is backing up workarea different from backing up content store ? if yes how? if no then why do you need the back up of work areas ?
How do you take back up of the individual workarea ?

If you are not using any third party software, you just copy iw-store to take the backup ?

Hi khyati,

first of all, please note that before you can create a backup of iw-store you must freeze the store (iwfreeze) or stop teamsite.

For a proper backup it is enough to backup iw-store. But the problem is that you can only restore the FULL iw-store. You can not restore 'just that file' from your iwstore-backup.

If in your situation you feel that you need individual file restores you'll need to backup file/areas/directories as well. This can be done via zip/tar etc. but this will NOT backup the ext-attributes. :-(

There are provisions/possibilities to backup content store (iw-store) in full or part, though the procedure to acheive this may vary.

Partial backup may involve a manual process and will require capturing/storing EA. These EA will have to be recreated/applied when you want to recover this part content.

The choise and suitability of either of the store backup methods deponds on the needs.

A workarea is a part of content store and will be backed up if the content store is backed up in its entirety. In this case, to recover content for the said workarea, the entire store should be recovered.

So how to take back up of particular work area ? How to apply EAs in backing up WAs ? To search a WA, we create a query using EA in TS search and execute this query at command prompt. How do we do it for backup ?

Pls explain.

You'll need custom code to back up ea's. E,g, a perl/java/ruby script.

Perl scripts for extracting and setting external attributes are available. Consider using them.

Workareas, and more specifically, modified files within workareas, are not backed up through the backing store - they can only be backed up through the virtual mount point (Y:\ on Windows, /iwmnt [by default] on Unix)

If you back up the backing store - then all the EAs, historical versions, etc. are backed up as part of the process.

If you back up through the virtual mount point you are responsible for recording EAs, for later retrieval / play-back as desired.
