Passing user data to a component
Kropotkin
Hi
I am wondering how we would do this:
We have a component which uses the SOAP external to call a web service. The component passes parameters to the Web Service.
How would we build a search form to capture user input and dynamically pass this as a parameter to the web service, through the component.
with thanks

You would have to write a custom Prefix/External to do that.

Hi Alex
Thanks. Is a Prefix/External something different from an External? Our interest now is in capturing user data via a form which we can then use in the component.
Also - we may drop the External idea. If we can capture user data can we use this in the component Appearance XSL? here is an example:
Lets say we have some Content XML:
<Data>

text here 1

text here 1

</Data>
And in our Appearnance XSL could we do:
capture the user input ('x' or 'y') as a variable $test?
Then have a selector:
<xsl:value-of select="Data/Item[
@cat=
'$test']" />
If we can't get the user data into an XSL variable perhaps we could conditionally execute XSL using script to control it?
with many thanks for your answers

Prefix is an external that executes before External and allows you to have more than 1 external call per component. You can have 0 or more Prefix calls before the actual External is executed. They all have the same signature.
