working of workflow

There is usergroup of three users for workarea and one of them is owner of workarea. Now when an author user finishes a task and "submit" it, control goes to reviewer who uis the owner of the workarea.

Once the work is submitted, can the author access that work again without reviewer sending back that work ? If not then why not because work is in the same workarea as yet. What process takes place when an author submits the work in a workarea that stops him from accessing the same work after submitting the work , eventhough work is in the same workarea as yet ? Does it make any changes in the permission after work is submitted ? In this process, work stays in the same place omly right ? I mean in the same workarea. So owner user of the workarea can acess this work even if author just leaves the work in the workarea and not submit it. So why do we need this workflow for the same workarea ?

A workflow is a semi-automated process used to provide uniformity and (hopefully) consistency in end-results.

It is possible to use TeamSite without any workflows, a bit easier to use TeamSite without any workflows except for the "submit-direct" ones, but generally best if you use a workflow designed for your actual needs and usage.

Your workflow could alter the permissions on the file after it has been submitted to prevent further editing of the file until either: (a) the work has been rejected back to the author for revision, or (b) the work has been fully processed and released to production [ or (c) the work has been terminated for some reason]

Or - your workflow might not do so with the understanding that some author might continue to make changes to files that are under review while the review is active - and you either decide that it is okay or use social pressure and/or training to change the ways of that author.
