java in .tpl files

Hi All,
Is there a way to write java statements in tpl files like we do with perl using iw_perl tag. Appreciate if some one explains from the scratch since i am a newbie to TS. What i mean is there way to customize an 'iw_java' kind of tag. (pl don't suggest iw_system as the solution)

The existing "old" style of PT and PT-processing engine is written in Perl - so the embedding of Perl code in those PTs is trivial.
Using the same PT-processing engine, you could embed perl code to invoke Java - e.g.:

...
<iw_perl>system("java ....");</iw_perl>
...

or you could create a custom iw_java tag - which is, in fact, a custom Perl module, to do essentially the same thing as the above - however, it begs the question as to whether you are trying to do this because you don't know Perl or whether you are trying to do this because you already have something written in Java that covers a [semi-]complex series of operations and don't want to have to re-implement it in Perl?

The other alternative is to use XSLT - and deal with the various pros/cons of that methodology ... which, for better or worse, seems to be the direction that Interwoven is heading.
