Global Variables not saved while editing in Task Details screen

I have added a global variable in workflow_custom.xml to be visible in the task details screen. But when I edit the value in that screen and click on save, the value does not save.
Even when I edit the value in Task Properties screen, a new label with the same name comes up in lower case.
