I've put together a draft of best practices for using Interwoven TeamSite and LiveSite with SEO. This document is a work in progress, so I'd really like to hear comments and all kinds of criticism about it. What's right, what's wrong, what's missing?

Speaking of SEO......

In LiveSite 3, how can I allow an author to specify a 301 (permanent) redirect to another page.

During their migration to LiveSite they will need to redirect to the new product pages using the old URLs to keep their ranking in the search engine.

You will need a controller and a ForwardAction based class. You controller would check whatever conditions it needs and if a redirect is needed you return your own ForwardAction based class (the one we provide OOTB is doing a 302).

Something like this:


public class My302ForwardAction implements ForwardAction   (or extends I forget if its an abstract class of interface)
{

  public void execute(RequestContext context)
  {
// use HTTPServletResponse  via  context.getResponse()
// Set the status to 301 and "Location:" to whatever you want
// The fact you are here means that controller returned this object 
//   and execute will be called and then response will be written

}

Your controller would be something like this:

  public ForwardAction my301controllermethod(RequestContext context)

 if ( some condition)
 {
  return new My302ForwardAction( some url );

 return null;   // null means do not redirect

On the original topic. Andrew it's a great start. I would mention the use of $PAGE_SCOPE in 3.1 as a way to get component controller meta-data and injection into other parts of the page. Email me if you want a sample/help on this feature as it is the easiest way to get SEO done, prior to 3.1 you have to create your own custom layout XSL which was cumbersome and difficult to migrate.

as mentioned by you in the post, i have been trying to implement the use of PAGE_SCOPE for the injection of meta information on the page, but i keep getting this RenderingException, unhandled exception when i try to see my page. Can you please send me an example on this as i am new to livesite and am not able to find much on the forum or point out what i am doing wrong here. using livesite 3.1.0.0

The moment i remove controller tag from my page it runs fine. here is my pre controller tag

This means that the object TestAction does not have a controller method named modifyPageTitle, either the name is wrong or signature is wrong.

Thanks Alex, the pre controller worked.

The problem was the return type, i was keeping it as Document type and totally ignored it in the stacktrace.

Being new to livisite i depend on the the documentation that i have received with livesite, but i could not find all such details. Is there any other guide that i am missing apart from the sitepublisher dev guide for 3.1.0
