passing global variable to cgi task

i need to be able to pass a global variable to a cgi task, where it then gets updated.

i have seen a couple of posts here where people have done that, and have other issues. but i am not able to even get the value of the variable into the cgi script.

can someone explain how that is done?
i.e.
what needs to be set in the modeler?
how do i extract the value from the cgi script?
how do i update the value from within the cgi script?

i have tried using GetVariable() and SetVariable()
but i'm guessing that my syntax is somehow messed up.
i am calling GetVariable('[Configurable Variable ID]') and SetVariable('[Configurable Variable ID]')

Quick Workarround would be to pass the value to your CGI script instead..
