Automatic file lock

We are using Teamsite 6.5 and files lock when the user selects to edit regardless of whether or not the file was modified. Is there and easy way to change this locking behavior such that the file will only lock if the file is modified?

Easy, no. Choices are live with it. Upgrade to 6.7.1 SP1 or write a custom script to do this for you. Upgrade is your best option

Not in TS 6.5, no. All you can do is to play with 3 available locking Models: Submit, Mandatory Write, Optional Write.
I would recommend against it. See TeamSite® Administration Guide for details.
