Component Layout Properties

TeamSite 6.7.1 SP1 / LiveSite 3.02

I need to extend the Layout Properties adding an additional field to pass to a custom page definition (Layout Properties is where background color, width, height, etc. are specified). Can anyone point me in the right direction, and include any sample code?

Note that this is different than Appearance XML, which is not passed to page definitions.
