What is the best way to programmatically add custom lookup field values to the db?

For example, we have a winforms application that you can enter various details into and it will then, via worksite 8.2 and the SDK, create a new workspace.

One of the custom lookup field values on the workspace is client, if the client is not already in the db, I'd like to add it to the db and then proceed with creating the workspace and use the newly added client value.

From the 8.x SDK, you may use the following methods which are exposed by the IManAdmin.dll to dynamically add new metadata to the database.

InsertParentCustomField
InsertChildCustomField

Dim db As INRTDatabase2

Const Custom1_name = "MyNewClient"
Const Custom1_description = "MyNewClientDesc"

db.InsertParentCustomField nrCustom1, Custom1_name, Custom1_description, True

(Keep in mind this DLL requires an admin login - and it's a separate dms object than the one from the imanage.dll.)

We have "COM Object for WorkSite Developer’s Reference Guide", but this has no mention of "InsertParentCustomField".

Secondly, is there a way that I can make this operation transactional: -

i.e, if the parent insert succeeds, but the child fails, the parent is rolled back?

Look up technical article 52815 under the Tech Library tab above for further reference info on these methods.

You won't find documentation about them from the "COM Object for WorkSite Developer’s Reference Guide" because, again, these API's are exposed by the IManAdmin.dll - not the iManage.dll. Although there is guide for the IManAdmin.dll guide, which is "COM Object for WorkSite Database Administration Developer's Guide", I also don't think these methods are documented there even though they should be.

You cannot rollback but you can delete the Parent field, by calling the DeleteParentCustomField Method, like so:

db.DeleteParentCustomField nrCustom1, CUSTOM1_OLD_ALIAS

Keep in mind that if this parent already has children under it, you should delete those children first. Like so:

' Assuming Client, AUTO, only has one child left, named "DOM"
db.DeleteChildCustomField nrCustom2, CUSTOM1_OLD_ALIAS, "DOM"
db.DeleteParentCustomField nrCustom1, CUSTOM1_OLD_ALIAS

Jny, thank you very much for your quick and succinct replies, though I'm not really sure how people develop anything that is not documented in the COM reference against the SDK without you on this forum.

I really don't get how am I supposed to help myself?

At present I'm doing a "find" over the technical documentation I have. If I can't locate the method in there, I have a scout on the forum; Then if that still yeilds nothing relevant and the tech libraries top 100 leaves me bereft, I'm left with the wonderfully ineffectual "guess the tech library doc ID", or, posting. Is this the only way?

Coding against the SDK (lacking a complete documentation set) is a bit like questioning an angry drunk with a large stick, sometimes it makes sense, but generally it just shouts a lot.

Don't get me wrong, searching and posting has served me well so far, but I'm just looking for some grand unifying theory of the sdk! Is there a centralised document, denoting method name, signature, function and owning dll or are you just solely answering these wretched posts from experience?

You mean, from this site, under the "Tech Library" tab which is directly above this page, you cannot get to the article by entering the article id 52815? You should be able to by:

1. Clicking on the "Tech Library" tab
2. Off to the left-hand pane, click on "look-up by ID"
3. Step 2 should take you to the page where you can enter the article id 52815.

Also, if you own the SDK license, you can always send your questions to Worksite-Devsupport@interwoven.com and we'll be able to help you more directly from there. Please always remember to include your company contact info, version of the SDK you use.

Haha, no, I can figure out how the tech library lookup by ID works, that's fine.

I mean, do you have a document that contains all of the functions and all of the method signatures in all of the libraries available to us!

To supplement the lack of documentation from the SDK, the next best thing I can think of would be to look them up via the Object Browser of the IDE you use, after the imanadmin.dll (or which ever type library you happen to use) is referenced.
