publishing using OpenDeploy

My understanding is that one can publish content using TeamSite and LiveSite as well. Can someone please let me know what is the advantage of using OpenDeploy

TeamSite, LiveSite and OpenDeploy are three different products from Interwoven . They have different features. Please read IWOV docs to understand them.

TeamSite needs OpenDeploy to publish anything. That's the basic thing and that's why I referred you to docs. You will have better understanding once you'll go through them.

Can't publishing be done without OpenDeploy or does it provide some extra features for deployment

Publishing can be done without using opendeploy, but after publishing you need to deploy right. If you understand Livesite, then you know internally LS uses OD for deploying sites to the production zones.

Please define - in precise detail - what you mean by the term "publishing".

I suggest that because I've been at a large number of customer sites and I've found that terms like "publish", "deploy", "staging", etc. sometimes mean very different things at different customer sites. So without the precise definition of what you mean - trying to answer your question is a bit difficult.
