Textarea length limit

Could anyone tell me how to restrict the field length of the textarea (including visual editor)? I am trying to restrict it to 4000 characters but somehow it keeps on appending the input of the extra characters.

the max you can specify for maxlength attribute is 255. You will need to do some custom js if you want to restrict to other values.

You can't stop entry within a textarea (as opposed to a plain old text item) when the limit is reached. All you can do is set a validation regex that will prevent saving if the limit is exceeded (or along similar lines, set an onItemChange handler that will check the length, pop an alert, and disallow saving.

maxlenght is an attribute of <text> and <browser> Tags.

<textarea> Tag does not have any built-in length constraints and never did. This question had popped up so many times that
Ghoti even bothered to assemble a little cross-reference post to outline various proposals.

I am not able to quote on this post but yes you are correct. Maxlength could not be used for textarea. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
