Checking EventSubsytem status

Hi All,

I have recently installed (TS-6.5 SP2 on Solaris) (for the first time I'm dealing with Admin related stuff) TS Search module on an already TS installed server and configured RDBMS settings. I'v followed the Installation guide upto running the iwreset -ui command.Now i've the following issues:

1. How can check whether the Event Subsystem is up and running? (if
there are any logs to be checked Please mention what i need to look for).
2. How can i make sure my DB configuration works? That is my DB and
Event Subsystem are in sync.

I went through all the guides, but unfortunately i couldn't find any useful info.

yeah well, the event system is a bit of a black box. :-(

Anyway, check the following:

1. eventsubd.log should look like this:


iweventsubd: ---------- STARTING: Sat Jul 26 21:11:01 MEST 2008
EVENTSUBD_HOME is set to /your/path
OpenJMS 0.7.6.1
The OpenJMS Group. (C) 1999-2004. All rights reserved.
http://openjms.sourceforge.net

2. check ALL logfile (iwserver, iwtrace, localhost_log..txt, servletd.log, .....) for any errors or messages

3. access the event-database-tables and see if they contain (a lot) data.

There are other log files as well for eventsub system:

/iw-home/eventsubsystem/openjms.db, /iw-home/eventsubsystem/openjms.lg

and also u can use ps -ef | grep event

Well, these are the (openjms)database files that are used to store the data IF (AND ONLY IF) you use the default openjms database, which is NOT the recommended option.

BTW, they are not 'log'-files and are not human-readable.

Agree with your comments...but here we just need to check if ESS is running or not...so just mentioned some other options apart from event system log file which in general are useful...

Is search working ok ? You mention setting up RDBMS for search? Do you mean Event Subsystem? Is eventsubsystem using hypersonic? The short answer is: If search is working then Event subsystem has to be working. Event Subsystem is OpenJMS with some additions. You could increase the logging verbosity for Eventsubsystem if you are really interested in what it is doing. If you are using a RDBMS for ES, have you just logged into the DB and checked to see if it is getting populated? Checked to see if search has registered as a JMS consumer? These would all be good things to check.

Please post the exact issue you are having, and list any config files you have changed. What port issues are you having? ES ports would have been an issue long before setting up RDBMS unless you changed the OOTO setup or have installed other apps locally recently.

Finally i manage to re-start the ESS with out errors. Now my eventsubd log looks like this:

Eventhough ESS started successfully, the tables are still empty even after i triggered several events in TS.
I guess there is nothing wrong with the DB Configuration in jmsconfignew.xml.
Any suggestions or comments appreciated...

Have you run the script (create_vender.sql) in your database from this path:
\\iw-home\eventsubsystem\conf\ddl ?

If no then run the script and restart the ESS. Check the updates.

Maybe you should check the setting in iw.cfg, something like:

es_enabled=true
ew_enabled=true

(I can never remember which on these two should be used, it seem to have changed from 1 version to another; I simply add both entries, just to be sure :-)

Guys,

The tables are already in place & DB config setting are done to the correct schema in jmsconfignew.xml further ESS enabled in the iw.cfg.
I did a TS re-start after the iw.cfg modification & servlet engine too re-started after the ESS re-start.
I can manually access the tables using the exact settings that are there in jmsconfignew.xml but still the tables are not getting populated.

Mystery continues. Any guesses...

is Search working?
Check to see if search is registered as a JMS consumer.
Increase ES logging verbosity in log4J
Since Servletd brokers requests for ES, Review servlet_out.log for errrors and also increase logging verbosity here too

One thing a neglected to mention. If search is your only registered consumer you may not see anything being added because search is an extremely fast handle consumer. You would need to turn off search index process/service to see if messages and handles are being added to the ES database.

After restarting the ESS do a "iwreset -ui" this will reset the event subsystem servlet.

Lets not confuse the topic of discussion here. Iwreset -ui will restart tomcat which is the jms bridge, but it is already being reviewed.
