using $variables with iwpt_dcr_value()

Following is a snippet of a simple subroutine that parses replicants.

Problem:
The following syntax: iwpt_dcr_value('$index.$sectionName'), returns null for the value of dcr.Bulletin Number.Number
BUT
The following syntax: iwpt_dcr_value('$index.Number'), returns the proper value of dcr.Bulletin Number.Number

Question:
1) Why doesn't iwpt_dcr_value() recognize the value in $sectionName?
2) How can I fix this?

I'm assuming you're passing in "Number" for the value of $sectionName - yes?

Have you tried using double-quotes (") instead of single-quotes (') surrounding the arguments given to iwpt_dcr_value() ?

Since I don't have the same DCT nor your complete PT - I modified a version of the Example Internet/Auction stuff (without replicants - sorry) and created a similar routine.

(I just tossed away the replicantName in this case)

Lower down in the PT I had the following:

        parseReplicants("****", "$i");
    }
< /iw_perl>

And, although it wasn't going through replicants, it seemed to work just fine. However, if I changed:

                      iwpt_dcr_value("dcr.$sectionName"),

to:

                      iwpt_dcr_value('dcr.$sectionName'),

It did not work - are you sure you tried with double-quotes in your code?

Yes, I'm positive I used double quotes, i.e. push @temp, "\"" . iwpt_dcr_value("$index.Number") . "\""; and I still recieve a null value.

Your code sparks my interest because you said that:

iwpt_dcr_value("dcr.$sectionName") WORKED
and
iwpt_dcr_value('dcr.$sectionName') !WORK

But

My code above works with: push @temp, "\"" . iwpt_dcr_value('$index') . "\"";
With the following: parseReplicants("Bulletin Category"); # List Box multiple selection = true
????? That's a topic for another day.

I think the problem might be with using variables and replicants??

Would you try that combination?

just a thought...
what happens when you print out iwpt_output("$index.$sectionName") -- you should get dcr.Bulletin Number.Number? Maybe this would help in figuring out what's going wrong? Also, have you tried not using quotes at all with $index.$sectionName?
...just a couple of ideas, hope they help.

Along with parseReplicants("Bulletin Number", "Number"); plus the sub, this says to me that the your DCT looks like this...

<replicant>
<item name="Number"><text/></item>
</replicant>
</item>

With parseReplicants("Bulletin Category"); plus the sub, this says to me that the your DCT looks like this...

<item name="Bulletin Category">
<replicant>
<item name="Number"><text/></item>
</replicant>
</item>

...$sectionName is undef because the only thing you passed to the sub is "Bulletin Category". It might help if you posted the DCT snippit this code refers to.

total guess from someone still learning perl...
How about this inside the sub -- my ($replicantName, $sectionName) = @_; (or = shift(@_)
It just seems like your sub is having trouble with the way the elements are being passed, since it works with Bulletin Category. Maybe someone else with more perl knowledge could chime in here...

Good guess, but the values are getting passed to the variables in the sub.

I've successfully printed the variables and received the proper values.

For some reason there seems to be a problem with iterating threw a replicant using $varaiables.

Does ANYBODY out there do this??? ... it's hard for me to believe that I'm the only one!

Okay - I finally took some time - used the DCT snippet you posted, and the subroutine (or pretty close) that you posted for the PT and tried it out... and I believe I have come up with a resolution -- though you'll have to be the judge.

In case it isn't clear - you need to construct the parameter for iwpt_dcr_value() out of (my terminology) the node pointer ($index), the node separator (.), and (using the Perl join operator '.') the evaluated string value of $sectionName.

Try it out - it seemed to work for me...
