VFE - input tag and bold it

We have a custom "insert element" functionality in our VFE which allows the user to select an element to be inserted into VFE. This element is later processed by the application. What is inserted in the VFE is something like

<input class="formatElement" disabled size="30" value="Applicant Full Name (ILA only)" variable="#variable(${sysFullName} '')">

The user now wants to be able to bold the final output produced from this element. In essence, surrong the input element with bold tags.

Problem: When the user clicks on the element, the format buttons go gray. One can view it in HTML and surround the input tag with bold tags but our users are not HTML proficient.

So any ideas on how to make it happen such that the user can surround an element like this with bold tags?

Path of least resistance thought: Either always wrap it in bold (and handle it in your insertion code) or create a second customization that provides for a bolded insertion (and handle it in your insertion code)
