image is not getting displayed in the component preview, a cross sign is displayed.

Make sure the Interwoven Proxy service is running.

component preview will use the first site it finds to dereference resources such as images, css, js. check the image url in the source (in the xml it should pre prefixed with $URL_PREFIX) also make sure if your Teamsite is windows that IIS is working (try to directly preview the image in CC) or apache on Solaris.

you can explicitly select the site for component preview by going through edit then choosing the site you want then using the preview link at the top right corner.
