Getting Referring contents list

Hello,

Say I have a CTD A which is being referred by a CTD B through a 'Content-MultiSelect' Widget.

How do I get the CIs of CTD B reffering a particular CI X of the CTD A?

If the widget in the CTD B were a content-select then I know we can get it through the API using getReferringContents method of the ManagedObject.

Is there any way to get referring contents in case if it is through a content-multiselect?

The ManagedObject method you mentioned isnot getReferringContent() but is getReferringManagedObjects() and is the methodyou need to get the objects that are referring to an instance of CT A. If youwanted to get the objects that are referred to by a given object then you wouldinstead use getReferredManagedObjects(). Note that both of these methods arefor management stage purposes only and do not work on a delivery stage.

The getReferringManagedObjects OR the getReferredManagedObjects either doesn't return the list of CIs that refer the content through a content multiselect. They work only if the content is being referred through a content select.

Scenario:

CTD A & CTD B are two Ctds. B has a content multiselect through which A's CIs are selected. Is there any way if I can find out for a particular CI 'X' of Ctd A is being referred by which all CIs of CTD B?

To reiterate, above methods don't work since it is a content-multiselect? Are there any other API or only option is through loop through relations of CTD B for each and every CI of B?

Actually those methods do work with thewidget you mentioned. If they aren’t working then that’s a signthat the referring CT is corrupt. The only reason it wont work is if theunderlying reference definition that is needed on the CT has not been properlydefined on the CT. You should be able to export the CT and see the referencedefinition associated with the attribute you assigned the widget to. If you don’tsee that in the XML of the CT then it’s somehow not been added (orinadvertently removed). I don’t recall exactly how this can occur whenediting a given CT, but there are known issues that can lead to this and Ibelieve it involves using the Apply button on the CTM. As a test, you can trycreating a new CT that uses the Content Multiselect widget, but avoid using theCTM’s Apply button when doing so. Instead use the OK button when you needto save and then reopen the CT in the CTM for continued editing.

To explain further, it isn’t thewidget that you use that causes reference data between objects to be maintainedby the VCM. Instead it is a structural construct (i.e. a reference definition) definedon each referring CT that causes this to happen. Widgets that allow a user atthe console to select other objects for a given CI to refer to are alsoresponsible for configuring appropriate reference definitions when assigned toa CT. If the console wasn’t being used, it would be completely possibleto construct a CT where instances of that CT could refer to other objects, allwithout ever assigning any widgets at all. But if the CT structure isn’tcorrectly defined then reference data will not be maintained.

Also, you should be aware that when a CThas been corrupted in this way, it isn’t just these API methods that willbe affected. The lack of reference data being maintained also prevents otherfunctionality from working properly, in particular, publishing and vgnexport. Theseother features rely on the reference data to properly publish/export referencedcontent.
