Versioning Questions

I have a number of Versioning questions, if anyone has any information, please let me know.

When a new Version of a Content Instance is created, using the ContentManagementOps.createVersion API, where is the information actually stored?
Is the version stored in the system database?
Is it stored as an XML document?
Are there space considerations to be taken into account before setting up versioning?
Is there any way of setting up automatic versioning once a CI has been published?

Any help with the above, or any documentation you may have, would be gratefully accepted.

I can’t comment on all of yourquestions, but here is what I can answer. The information is stored in both thesystem database and as an XML file on disk in the default file source. Certainparts of the system metadata are stored in the database, while the remainder ofsystem metadata, as well as user data, is stored in the XML file. In the caseof static files, the static file content will also be duplicated on disk.

David, thank you so much for getting back to me on this, really appreciate it. Another quick question though.

When you delete a content instance that had previous versions, are these versions also deleted?

For example, if I deleted a content instance and months later I want to retrieve it or one of its versions, can it be done?

Yes, existing versions are deleted whenyou delete a content instance, so no, you can’t restore a deleted contentinstance by restoring a version. But you could use vgnexport for that purpose,by exporting the content instance at the point you would want to create aversion of it, although that’s a very different approach.
