Limiting referenced items while publishing

Hi there

While publishing we are facing a challenge: Primary content is directly or indirectly refernces other content items. So while publishing, we need to approve all those content items which are not directly or indirectly related to primary content item.

Content type of the parent CI has multiple 'Content Select', 'Relator CCE' widgets to refer child CIs.

<p>I would like to know if there is any way we can limit the referenced items by primary CI. We have tried the 'Object references' option in Content Select CCE configuration. But it doesn't work because of a known Vignette defect for CTDS with existing content instances. Also it is just limited to 'Content Select CCE' widget.

Can anyone help in overcoming this?

Check the publishing policy. You can set the publishing policy to linient if that suits your needs. However, you will need to approve the related items and publish them for first time even with linient policy settings.

Hi Sohail,

Thanks for your response. I have tried this option.However, lenient option is used for reference content items which are time ineligible. I am basically looking at limiting the '# of items' which come up as 'unapproved' during publishing and business users need to take the extra step of approving lot of items. They are not sure if those items need to be approved at all in the first place and more risk is if they need to be published at all?.

If the linked items are not supposed to be published at the time, how will these relationships be established at the delivery stage? Allowing the item to be published without referenced items may result in end point suspension during content subscription event.

Also, will it not result in broken links on your webiste (if there are links on your website to related content from this content item)??

Our approach here is that we use custom "soft" Selection List and General Selection List widgets which do not establish references between the content items. Then we can publish just the primary item and not it "related" items. Obviously the CDA has to be smart enough to handle the case if those items don't exist on the delivery stage. So, there's pros/cons for it. But, for us, it was a business rule to not publish items that weren't part of the approval workflow payload. This was our solution.
