adding a new field to DCT, effect on existing DCRs

Hi,

I added a new field to a DCT, a textfield.
How will this effect the DCRs created with the old version that didnt have this field?

Can i open them using the new DCT, save them, and they will be updated to the new version, or will there be problems?

You should be Ok, just try it first on some guinea pig DCR to make sure.

Basically, you will have problems if as a result of DCT changes XPATH of some of the existing items has been changed.
That may happen for example if you introduce new Container to the existing structure, stuff like that. Adding single scalar
item is practically always harmless

No problems, this happens all the time. If you need to add a field automatically, I tend to use a perl script to do it, but in your case it does not sound like you need to worry.

One final point, do not mess with the item names, move current items (add another container level), etc. That certainly will cause you to lose data in your DCRs.

Expanding on the last two posts - the basic concepts are these:

As an example of that last point, if you have 3 items (A, B, and C) all sitting at the root level of the DCT (or at the root level of the same container) - and you decided that for user-interaction purposes you'd rather have them show up in the order of C, B, and A -- you can do so, and it will not cause any problems. This is because the XPATH information for each element is only dependent on its parent nodes, not its sibling nodes.

So thats exactly what my understanding was. But here is the same issue I am facing (bullet #3 above). Its emptying all element values for that tab when opened exiting DCR.

I just tried to update dct with new container. Moving existing element to new container in one of the tab as below.

The above element was part of another container above "md". So just removed element "mdkey" & added seperate container as above in the same tab. I was expecting empty element value for "mdkey". But its breaking whole tab, removing values from all the fields in that tab.

Any suggestions?

Did you ever find a solution? I am adding new fields to a DCt with tabs and losing all data on that tab.

Thoughts?
