<command v= /> syntax and iwsend_mail.ipl

we're trying to use the sample of the <command v= .../> found in the iwsend_mail.ipl script appendix of the 5.0.1 (Solaris) wf manual, with a variable for the -t flag - Is this actually possible? am hoping that we're overlooking a simple syntax issue and a 2nd set of eyes may catch it-

have tinkered with the syntax in many different ways, and the only it seems to work is without variable

<command v='__INSERT__('/projects/iw-home/bin/iwsend_mail.ipl -t $iw_user -m "Please Rework Reviewed Content" -s "TeamSite Task Notification"');'/> doesn't work

<command v='__INSERT__('/projects/iw-home/bin/iwsend_mail.ipl -t "$iw_user" -m "Please Rework Reviewed Content" -s "TeamSite Task Notification"');'/> doesn't work

<command v='__INSERT__("/projects/iw-home/bin/iwsend_mail.ipl -t $iw_user -m "Please Rework Reviewed Content" -s "TeamSite Task Notification"");'/> does not work neither

<command v='__INSERT__("/projects/iw-home/bin/iwsend_mail.ipl -t "testusr4" -m "Please Rework Reviewed Content" -s "TeamSite Task Notification"");'/> does work, but obviously hardcoded -t value won't work

extra info:
we know the problem isn't with email server setup, connectivity, etc because another email externaltask that uses the __INSERT__(get_mail_cmd("$iwhome", "$br_owner")); syntax does work and sends email-

however, we want to customize the messages, subject line and the get_mail_cmd subroutine doesn't seem to offer variables for passing these additonal flags to iwsend_mail.ipl, only the -t flag

The above *should* work - assuming that $iw_user is defined.

Turn on debugging within the wft - so that you get the yellow/green screen when you try to instantiate it - this will show you what the __INSERT__() is putting into the wft - and should help you to debug the problem.

I've found that the double quotes "" at the beginning and end of the __INSERT__ string (including your example) break the New Job CGI form- all's I get is the Run Job and Cancel buttons - do you not get same result ?
-- uncommenting the iw_debug_mode variable didn't help either, same result

if I swap your double quotes for single quotes, this fixes the New Job CGI panel problem : <command v='__INSERT__('/projects/iw-home/bin/iwsend_mail.ipl -t $iw_user -m "Please Rework Reviewed Content" -s "TeamSite Task Notification"');'/>

but then the job spec/iw_output_file puts in the literal value, not the variable value : <command v='/projects/iw-home/bin/iwsend_mail.ipl -t $iw_user -m "Please Rework Reviewed Content" -s "TeamSite Task Notification"'/>

iw_debug_mode shows the following:
[ 282] $_this_->__INSERT__('/projects/iw-home/bin/iwsend_mail.ipl -t $iw_user -m "Please Rework Reviewed Content" -s "TeamSite Task Notification"');

I also fixed the space between the < and the leading "c" in your command entry -assumed that was a typo, right?

$iw_user is definitely defined, because when I use the following command, it works correctly (though very generic messaging, labeling, etc):
__INSERT__(get_mail_cmd("$iwhome", "$iw_user"));

There were a few too many quotes to make what you wanted work easily within just the XML portion of the wft.

Instead - use the template_script section to create a variable with the full command in it - and then use that variable:

< template_script< ![CDATA[
my $cmd = qq(/projects/iw-home/bin/iwsend_mail.ipl -t $iw_user -m "Please Rework Reviewed Content" -s "TeamSite Task Notification");
]]>< /template_script>

    ...
    < command v='__INSERT__("$cmd");'/>
    ...

Note: single-quotes on the outside, double-quotes on the inside (this time I tested things first just to make sure ;-)

Another approach would be to escape the double-quotes as follows:

< command v='__INSERT__("/projects/iw-home/bin/iwsend_mail.ipl -t $iw_user -m \"Please Rework Reviewed Content\" -s \"TeamSite Task Notification\"");'/>

You were on the right track when you tried a mixture of single quotes and double quotes, but Perl treats the two differently. It will not do the variable substitution within single quotes.
