Use Channel Presentation template for all CTDs under it

I think waht I'm trying to do is possible but I'm unsure as to how to approch it. Under my site I have a department's area. This area has individual channels for the various departments that we have. These channels have a unique look and feel to distingush them from the rest of the site. The CTDs that are used in the department area are used in other areas of the site as well. Right now when I click on a CI that is in the department area I get the look and feel of the main site, but I want to get the look and feel of the department area. Is there a way to have different a different presentation template used for a CTD based on the channel that is under?

In V7.x, the presentation templates are “global” atthe site level for a given CTD.

In V8.x, the same principle applies, BUT you can now overridethe presentation template at CTD (Content Instance) level (other new items likeThemes and Page Layouts can be overridden too)

One way of achieving this is to have multiple override JSPs for the content type and call the appropriate one based on the department. You will need to have a logic to identify which department you are on (based on the context channel). Once that is identified, you can include the item component with appropriate override JSP for the correct look and feel.

If your look and feel is controlled purely by stylesheets and the html for the individual components do not change then this is simply a matter of including proper stylesheets based on the department. If your html components are also changing, then you will need to have different components or include department in the component cache key so each variation is cached separately.

Lastly, you will need to identify a "default" channel in case the context channel is empty.

At the system level, you will have only one Template registered for the item level as Bertrand mentioned.
