Get asset metadata?

Is there a way to list and/or retrieve all available metadata objects/values for a given asset? How can this be accomplished if I don't know all pertinent metadata IDs beforehand? This is on MB 4.5.2.

If I get a list of all metadata items on the server and go through that I get an error (MBPNetModel.MBObjects.MBException: MBException: The requested metadata item is unavailable. (0x80040500)) when trying to retrieve all metadata values for the asset when a metadata value is not defined. According to the API guide the function (getassetmetadata) should return null but I'm getting this exception...

Any pointers?
