Can I stop users to create new folders with special characters such as $?
You mean besides tracking them down and whacking them on the head until they stop doing it?You might be able to use an iwat trigger for the event of creating a new directory (not sure what it is, but it should be easy to find by doing it and then looking at the iwevents.log) - but this would be a post-operative process so you would probably have to do something like delete the offending folder and then send email to both the user and the administrators to indicate that such-and-such happened.
I have been suggesting at-triggers as well, for a while, for this very purposes. But it has 2 drawbacks - 1. at-triggers are heavy memory-wise2. the users will not see the result of the trigger changing the directory name immediately, so there could be significant usage issues. What we have done is the custom CGI script that creates a folder according to an organization's rules. If an offending character is entered, the script will create a folder but will output the resulting folder name to the user.
I would create a submit-workflow that would reject submission of any of this folders. This will not stop the creation but will stop publication of the folders.
You could certainly include such verifications in your workflows - and it is reasonable to do so to catch situations that somehow get past the initial verification step (via custom menu item) - like when someone imports a folder that doesn't conform to the desired standards or when someone goes through the file system interface and manually creates a folder that does not conform (though in the latter case, they could also run iwsubmit from the command line and the workflow process will never run either)
Another issue with the WF approach is that if I create a non-confirming dir and add a new file, and submit the file only, then the dir gets submitted as well. This implies that for every file that is submitted, you need to check the folder. Then the question is what do you do next. Adam's approach of custom menu item is a solid approach, unless someone has the workarea mapped and uses explorer, which will not be affected.Andy
