Update CI in a workflow activity without calling commit.

We are working on VCM 7.3.1 and we have a requirement to setup a manual activity, where the owner of the manual activity will accept / reject the content to express the decision for setting a value in one particular attribute of the CI.

Now, we have thought of having an automatic activity succeeding the parking task owner's decision to set the value in the payload CI if it is approved by the parking task owner. 

Is there a way to update the CI without calling commit so that an another workflow instance does not get triggered within the current workflow instance on the updation of the CI?

There is no way to update any object without calling commit, butif there is already a workflow instance running for the committed object then asecond workflow instance will not be started.
