Hi,

I am trying to get the list of all the manged objects within a project, the first method just works fine but the other does not, here is the code sample, I am using, please suggest.

Working Code:

            ip = f.getManagedObjectsByType( rp, "PkAppMessage");
            for (int i=0;i < list.size();i++) {
                ManagedObject mo = (ManagedObject) list.get(i);
                AttributeData[] at = ((ContentInstance) mo).getAttributes();
                for (int a=0;a<at.length;a++) {
                    log( prefix+"    attrib: "+at[a].getName()+"="+at[a].getValue());
                } }

Problem Code:

Markus,

If the Project has any Static File in it will throw Exceptionbased on your code. Can you look into logs and tell us what exception you see.

Add a check to your code, if the ManagedObject is of typeContentInstance before type casting.

there are no exceptions/errors, the same content items are correctly returned.

BUT, with the first snippet we get attributes, with the second we don't:

AttributeData[] at = ((ContentInstance) mo).getAttributes(); is an empty list.

we would expect getManagedObjectsByType() and getManagedObjects() to return the same result with the same "level of detail".

The level of Details returned depends on instance ofRequestParameter object you bass to the get method.

How have you created the rp object in both the cases?

The basic diffrence between the 2 method you are using is undelying Query implementation being used.

For getManagedObjectsByType() underlying Query implementation will be either StaticFileDBQuery or ContentInstanceDBQuery or MultiContentDBQuery.

For getManagedObjects() underlying Query implementation will always be ManagedObjectDBQuery.

The TopRelation for ManagedObjectDBQuery will only have system information where as TopRelation for other Query Type mentioned above will also contain attributes from Primary Table for the type.

I belive this is the reason for diffrence you see. If this is very important to you I would suggest you open a VOLSS ticket to confirm this.

Normally the way you get around this issue is by introducing call to findByContentManagementId in the for loop. Aternately you can pass a constant to getManagedObjectsByType() which indicates it needs to query all the Types.

yes, i was playing with different methods of accessing content (that's basically what i do right now: explore the api) and getting different results ...

but i don't like the idea of retrieving the elements, extracting the guid and then issuing another "getContentByGuid" call. seems cumbersome, bad design, not performant etc .. to me.

And you’re not the first to identify the issue here. Thishas unfortunately always been this way, but there are already open tickets forcovering making changes to the API behavior. However, one of the problems withmaking changes to the behavior is that most users of this API now expect the currentbehavior and work around it, and to change it would actually introduce aperformance degradation for current implementations. While I agree this is notan ideal design, I believe the original thinking behind it was that whenissuing heterogeneous queries all that would be returned are properties commonto all result items, which in itself is not unreasonable, but there should havealso been another way to get more data if needed.
